What is life coaching?

Life coaching is future-oriented therapy focused on achieving goals. My approach is to focus on the positives to ensure you work towards reaching your mind and body well-being goals with an optimistic mindset. I ask questions, listen to your responses and see where the emotional, habitual and physical challenges are, and keep you to account.

I find that people are unaware of how many factors are influencing their burnout behaviours and I highlight how to work with these factors. I help them understand and manage them so they feel less tired and more relaxed about life.

I'm based in Ashfield, Sydney and during Covid am working online. Early morning appointments are available.

Here's an excerpt of a recent interview: https://youtu.be/uI5fKFjYc6w

"Wendy is a great observer and has a master talent for holding space to allows for comfortable sharing and honest conversations. Our sessions have found me feeling at ease with things I have been struggling with for months and years in both my career and personal life. Through her careful understanding of the nuances of my daily routine, work life, and future goals, she helped me almost immediately by providing me with recognition of the problems and then the methods to address them. Her approach is very respectful, light hearted but honest and through this we arrived at several observations together, leading me toward a greater awareness of self."

What are your qualifications?

I completed a 4-year diploma as a Somatic Psychodynamic therapist and a 4 year Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) degree. My honours thesis studied the effect of loving-kindness meditation on prosocial behaviour. I am currently enrolled in a 2-year in-depth mindfulness diploma. I have studied meditation and Buddhism since 2003 in the Theravada and Vajrayana traditions in Sydney, the UK & Europe and Thailand focusing on finding ways to see the world in a more kindly light.

Sessions – how many, how long, where are they and confidentiality?

I suggest 5 sessions to begin with as this will provide a solid enough understanding of the life coaching process and allow you to have bedded in some of your new habits. In addition, it will allow you to see how the psychological processes influence behaviours to give you a chance to gain agency with behaviours. Each session is an hour and I’ll send follow-up notes at the end of the session and as a mid-week prompt. Early morning appointments are available. The sessions are held online to be Covid-Safe. My office is in Ashfield, Sydney. I maintain client confidentiality.

What happens during the sessions?

The session format has been overwhelmingly positive. People find the sessions are goal-oriented and people feel well-supported between sessions. At the beginning of each session, I ask a goal to focus on and the session follows this format:

  • A 30-minute chat about the goal you'd like to achieve.
  • 10 minutes of preparation for a personalised meditation tailored to achieve the goals.
  • 10 minutes meditation recorded on Padlet so you can listen to it between sessions at a convenient time.
  • A review of the session and any final questions.
You'll receive emails:
  • Post-session: with the conversation topics covered, the agreed goal to achieve (the homework is usually only 1 item), and a link to the notes & meditation.
  • Between-session: homework and notes & meditation
  • Pre-session on the day: with the homework.

What goals do you work with?

I focus on personal well-being such as eating properly, exercising regularly, setting up a regular meditation practice and beginning a digital detox.

What's the difference between psychotherapy and life coaching?

Life coaching is future oriented where we work together in a question and answer form to understand the ‘how and when’ to meet your goals. Psychotherapy is past oriented where the focus is on how our early life experiences influence current behaviours. Psychotherapy works to resolve complex relational and emotional experienced that are deep-seated, e.g., a personality disorder, depression & anxiety, or trauma. If you need to look at these types of complex psychological issues, I recommend a psychotherapist, counsellor or psychologist as this is beyond my area of expertise. A good question to ask a prospective psychotherapist is how they work with shame. If the response is to deny shame or make shame ‘bad’, I recommend looking for an alternative therapist as no feeling or thought is unacceptable or wrong despite being uncomfortable, confusing and/or painful.

YOUR LIFE COACH

Wendy Nash

I have a 4-year diploma of somatic psychotherapy, a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) degree and 17 years of ongoing meditation practice and Buddhist study to understand how we can change our lives. I apply what I have learnt in my own journey through becoming happy in daily life despite the death of family members at a young age.

I lost 17kg over a 3-year period and have kept it off for 25 years. I’ve always tried to do some kind of exercise even though I don’t like it and recently completed the NHS 9-week program to run for 30 minutes every second day (Couch to 5k).

Examples of client results I have achieved:

  • Helped clients regain their weekends and nights

  • Increase their productivity at work and reduce the frequency of sitting in front of the screen being resentful and ineffective

  • Improving sleep quality

  • Eating less junk food

  • Increasing exercise frequency

  • Commit to a digital detox

Clients have included a range of clients including CEOs, entrepreneurs, fundraisers and recent university graduates.
